At times Dover Economy Store employees couldn't keep up with water that flowed into the store in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

"It was rough when we first got here," said Ken Hite, manger of the 67 N. Main St. store in Dover.

When Hite arrived Tuesday morning, he found about a foot of water in the lower basement section of the store and quickly set to work draining what he called "a swimming pool."

The York Rescue Mission in York City, which operates the store, sent five employees armed with Shop-Vacs to help pump water out of the flooded basement.

In conjunction with two sump pumps, Hite and the employees were able to empty the store of water in about 12 hours.

Second time: Water invaded the economy store through its walls and also flowed up through a drain, emptying water into the basement.

The flow was too great for a sump pump that usually takes care of the invasive water, Hite said.

"It was running for so long and became so hot that you couldn't touch it," Hite said.

This wasn't the first time that the store flooded. During Tropical Storm Lee, water flooded the basement but Hite said more water came into the store during Sandy.

"This one it just kept coming in," he said. "We couldn't stop it."

With memories of Lee in mind, employees took precautions and moved merchandise to higher ground Monday. No merchandise was lost to water.

However, the store was closed Tuesday as employees cleaned up the mess. It reopened Wednesday, Hite said.
