A West York man is accused of filling his apartment building with smoke while CUI -- cooking under the influence.

Rocky Shaffer, 53, of 1236 W. Market St., second floor, is charged with reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct for the Oct. 16 incident.

West York Police said firefighters were called to Shaffer's home just before 6 p.m. that day for a report of smoke in the apartment building.

They found heavy smoke had filled the building, caused by unattended food cooking in Shaffer's kitchen, police said.

Police said they filed charges because Shaffer was highly intoxicated at the time and could have started a fire in the semi-detached house.

Firefighters evacuated the building and used exhaust fans to clear smoke, police said.
