A report of an erratic driver in Lancaster County led police to a burglary that happened in West Manchester Township.

Police arrested Michael Angelo Diaz, 21, of no fixed address, for a burglary at McNamara Auto Sales at 1775 Rodney Road on Thursday, Oct. 11, the same night he allegedly hit a sign with an SUV stolen from the dealership, according to police.

Diaz is charged with burglary, theft and receiving stolen property. He remains in York County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail, according to a prison official.

Diaz is also charged with a traffic violation in Lancaster County for the alleged hit and run, online court documents state.

A motorist called West Hempfield Township (Lancaster County) Police and reported seeing a 2000 Jeep Cherokee hit a street sign in the township and then drive away a little after 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct 10, police said.

West Hempfield Police pulled over the SUV, which did not have a license plate, and found it had damage to its front end from hitting the sign. Police also found Diaz, who could not provide police with registration and insurance information, behind the wheel, according to Diaz's charging documents.

Stolen: Police took Diaz back to the station for questioning, during which he admitted to stealing the SUV from the West Manchester Township dealership, charging documents state.

Diaz told police that he broke into the dealership and stole keys to the Jeep and drove off in it, documents state.

A West Manchester Township Police officer responded to McNamara Auto Sales and found that the building had been broken into and that a 2000 Jeep Cherokee and a set of keys for a 2003 Jeep Liberty were missing. A file cabinet and a box containing keys to vehicles had also been ransacked, with keys strewn across the garage floor, documents state.

The officer took note that there was fresh damage to the door handle on the front door of the business, documents state.

Police were unable to recover the missing keys to the 2003 Jeep Liberty, documents state.

A second West Manchester Township Police officer went to East Hempfield Township to bring Diaz back to York County's central booking, where he was arraigned.
