1. ATHLETIC DIRECTOR'S DAYS ARE NUMBERED AT PENN STATE

The university won't renew the contract of Tim Curley when it expires in June. Curley is awaiting trial and has been on leave since being charged with perjury and failing to report a child sex abuse allegation against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

2. EAGLES' BYE WEEK BECOMES BYE-BYE WEEK FOR DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Juan Castillo is the first assistant coach to be fired midseason since Andy Reid became Philadelphia's head coach 14 years ago. The defense has struggled in two last-minute losses that have left the team 3-3 heading into its bye week.

3. BUT THERE'S BRIGHTER NFL NEWS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STATE

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be one of four teams to play regular season games in London next year. The Steelers will play the Minnesota Vikings at Wembley Stadium on Sept. 29, 2013. Jacksonville and San Francisco will play at the same stadium on Oct. 27, 2013.

4. FACEBOOK-FRIENDLY HOSTAGE SUSPECT DUE IN PITTSBURGH COURTROOM

Twenty-two-year-old Klein Michael Thaxton faces a hearing today to see whether he'll stand trial on charges that he took a businessman hostage in his downtown office last month. The case drew national headlines as Thaxton posted Facebook updates before surrendering.

5. MAYBE THIS IS WHY SOME FOLKS PREFER MORE EXPERIENCED POLITICAL CANDIDATES

A 19-year-old borough councilman in eastern Pennsylvania is charged with stealing three campaign signs from a yard before driving into a soybean field where two bottles of beer were found in his car. Alburtis Borough councilman Kyle Bower took office in January and was sentenced the same day to probation for throwing a brick through his ex-girlfriend's window.
