Giant Food Stores has removed a brand of organic peanut butter cups from its shelves due to a possible salmonella contamination.
Colorado-based organic food producer Justin's voluntary recalled certain peanut butter products, including its organic milk chocolate peanut butter cups and dark chocolate peanut butter cups that were sold at Giant stores.
The recall was announced Friday.
Justin's peanut butter products are being recalled because peanuts possibly used in production could be contaminated with salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, according to a news release from the company.
Peanuts used in the products were processed at a New Mexico plant owned and operated by Sunland Inc.
Previous recall: Sunland issued an initial recall the included peanut butter and other nut butter products on Sept. 24 due to the threat of the products being contaminated with salmonella, according to the company.
To date, 35 confirmed case of illness have been linked to the tainted Sunland peanut butter. Of those cases, 63 percent of those people affected are under the age of 10, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Eight people have been hospitalized but no deaths have been reported, the CDC said.
However, Giant has not received reports of illnesses associated with consumption of Justin's products, the company said.
The affected products are 1.4 oz. Justin's Organic Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, UPC 89445500024, with best by dates of 11/11/11 through 3/23/13 and 1.4 oz. Justin's Organic Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, UPC 89445500025, with best by dates of 11/11/11 through 3/23/13.
Customers who have purchased the product should discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to a Giant store for a full refund.
