A Lower Chanceford Township woman is accused of abusing her infant son, including causing a broken thigh.

Amber Elizabeth Felts, 30, of the first block of Thompson Road is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and endangering the welfare of a child, according to her charging documents.

She is free on $40,000 unsecured bail.

State police filed the charges against Felts Wednesday, but said the injuries were discovered after Felts and her mother took the 8-week-old infant to York Hospital in July.

Chris Ferro, Felts' attorney, said his client denies causing the injuries.

"I'm incredibly disappointed my client has been arrested and charged with these criminal offenses," he said. "We look forward to her day in court and our ability to disprove these allegations."

Injury: Felts, the infant and Felts' ex-boyfriend, who is the father of the child, were at Felts' home after attending a parade on July 14 when Felts changed the child's diaper and he began to cry, according to her charging documents.

Felts gave the child and a bottle to her ex-boyfriend, but the infant refused the bottle and the man gave the baby back to Felts, who noticed a mark on the child's back and accused her ex-boyfriend of causing the injury, the documents state.

Later that day, Felts and her mother, Gwendolyn Felts, who notified police about the suspected abuse, took the child to York Hospital.

Physicians suspected abuse and ordered X-rays, against the wishes of Amber Felts, documents state.

Technicians did not notice any other injuries on the X-rays, and Amber Felts and her son returned home about 3 a.m. on July 15.

While Amber Felts was alone with her son between 3:30 and 4 p.m., she noticed that his leg fell to the side while she was changing him, documents state.

Amber Felts, her mother and the child returned to York Hospital to have his leg examined and physicians gave Amber Felts the X-rays and suggested she go to Hershey Medical Center for specialty treatment, documents state.

Broken ribs: Andi Taroli, a physician at Hershey Medical Center, reviewed the X-rays and discovered the child had nine rib fractures that were healing, documents state.

She was able to determine the injuries were three to four weeks old, meaning the infant was about a month old when he suffered the injuries, documents state.

Taroli told police that the type of fractures were "almost exclusively seen in physical abuse" in which the infant's rib cage was "squeezed

between a person's hands," documents state.

A scan of the infant's right leg found that a "significantly displaced and angulated midshaft oblique femur fracture with soft tissue swelling and edema." Taroli told police there is no possibility the broken thigh was the result of an accident, documents state.

Additional tests were conducted, and Taroli concluded that "these injuries (are the result of) physical child abuse," documents state.

Removed: Amber and Gwendolyn Felts were the only two people with the child between when the initial X-rays were performed on July 14 and when the child was taken back to the hospital to have his leg examined on July 15.

Gwendolyn Felts said she did not notice anything wrong with the child's leg while she was at her daughter's house, leading police to believe the fracture happened after Gwendolyn Felts left her daughter's home on July 15, documents state.

The child has been removed from Amber Felts' home and is in care of York County Children, Youth and Families, Ferro said.

"Children and Youth Services is involved, and they have removed the child from my client's home," Ferro said. "But she maintains (supervised) visitation with the child."
