On a day when York County was pounded with torrential rain, only one local outdoors sports event managed to weather the storm.

And for the York College women's soccer team, the drenching they absorbed ended up being well worth it.

The Spartans emerged from the contest vs. visiting Penn State Harrisburg soggy but victorious, 3-0.

According to the official box score, a crowd of 38 people ignored the elements to watch the match.

York improved to 3-1-3 with the non-league victory, while Penn State Harrisburg fell to 2-3. York and Penn State Harrisburg will become Capital Athletic Conference foes in 2013.

Elizabeth Bunn, Jamie Sokolis and Jena Arnister scored the goals for York, while Dale Mason provided an assist.

The Spartans dominated the action, outshooting Penn State Harrisburg, 25-3, while also holding a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.

Goalie Melanie Glessner earned her fifth shutout of the year, recording two saves. Glessner's scoreless streak now stands at 275 minutes, 35 seconds, dating back to the Dickinson game when she surrendered her lone goal of the year. Glessner lowered her goals-against average to 0.14. She's allowed just one goal in 645 minutes of work.

The match kicked off a five-match home stand for York that continues on Saturday when the Spartans play host to Marymount in a CAC contest. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Graham Field. York is 0-0-1 in the CAC, while Marymount is 0-1-0.

OTHER YORK COLLEGE NOTES

YORK TAKES LAST-SECOND FIELD HOCKEY VICTORY: The York College women's field hockey team scored the game-winning goal with no time left on the clock to claim a 3-2 non-conference victory against Shenandoah Tuesday night in Winchester, Va.

The win improved the Spartans' overall record to 4-2, while Shenandoah fell to 5-3.

Kailey Brewer scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Sandee Reich to give York the victory.

Madi Wilt, who leads York this season with four goals, added a goal and an assist for York. Susquehannock High School graduate Ashton Burk also had an assist for the Spartans.

SPARTANS TRIUMPH IN VOLLEYBALL: The York College women's volleyball team rolled to a 25-23, 25-16, 25-15 Capital Athletic Conference victory over visiting Wesley on Tuesday night in Wolf Gymnasium.

The Spartans evened their CAC record at 1-1, while Wesley fell to 0-2. Both teams are 3-12 overall.

Melissa Patterson and Dani Mastroieni each had nine kills for the Spartans. Allie Donahue picked up 32 assists, while Ashley Rineman collected 13 digs.

DOVER'S PARSHALL HONORED BY CAC: York College sophomore Misty Parshall has been selected the Capital Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week after her third-place finish at the Rich Actzehn Classic this past weekend.

That is up three places from her sixth-place finish only a year ago. Parshsall, from Dover, was the first Spartan to cross the finish line at 25 minutes, 9.48 seconds.
