York College sophomore runner Misty Parshall has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week for the week ending on Sept. 16.

Parshall, from Dover, led the Spartan women's cross country team to the championship of the Rich Achtzehn Classic in York on Saturday.

Parshall finished third overall in the race and first among her Spartan teammates, clocking in with a time of 25 minutes, 9.48 seconds. She was the first of five Spartans who all finished in the top eight en route to the team championship.

Parshall has been York's top finisher in both meets so far in 2012.

Parshall is a secondary education mathematics major.

OTHER YORK COLLEGE NOTES

YORK GOLFERS TAKE SIXTH: The York College golf team finished sixth of 16 teams at the Bent Creek Franklin & Marshall Invitational at Bent Creek Country Club in Lancaster. The Spartans shot a team total of 316. Alvernia shot a 294 to win the event. The Spartans' team score was a little deceptive because two Spartans, Matthew Storck and Austin Parker, both played as individuals and excelled. Storck fired a 2-over-par 73 to finish sixth. Parker shot 74, which tied him for ninth. If Storck and Parker had earned spots in the starting lineup, the Spartans would have shot a team total of 299 and finished second. Junior Kevin Long paced the scoring Spartans with a 75, tying for 13th in the 84-player field. Freshman Tyler Keim had a 77, good for a tie for 23rd.

SPARTANS WIN IN MEN'S SOCCER: The York College men's soccer team used two first-half goals to capture a 2-1 win against Lycoming in a non-conference matchup Monday afternoon. The Spartans improved to 5-1-1 overall, while the Warriors fell to a 2-2-1. York is ranked ninth in the NCAA Division III by d3soccer.com. Freshman Greg Bechard and Taylor Brummitt had York's goals, while Austin Johnson had an assist. It was Bechard's first career college goal. York finished with a 31-8 advantage in total shots and a 15-5 margin in shots on goal, as well as an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. In goal, Susquehannock grad Jesse Derksen had three saves in 70:36 to earn the win.

BUA HONORED BY CAC: York senior forward Antonio Bua has been selected as the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Bua picked up the CAC Offensive Player of the Week award after he scored twice, including the game-winner, in Saturday's CAC triumph at Wesley. Bua leads York with four goals in six matches this season.
