A York City man is dead after state police say he fled officers and crashed his vehicle near Kiwanis Lake in the city early Sunday morning.
Hector Gonzalez, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene after the vehicle he was driving wound up in Kiwanis Lake, according to the York County Coroner's Office.
Neither the coroner's office or state police could provide a more specific address for Gonzalez.
State police said troopers saw a vehicle driving erratically on Route 30 in the area of Pennsylvania Avenue at 3:24 a.m. Sunday. After observing several traffic violations, troopers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but Gonzalez refused to stop, police said.
Gonzalez fled south on Pennsylvania Avenue and lost control at its intersection with Parkway Boulevard, police said.
His vehicle struck a curb at the intersection and then hit a tree before crashing into Kiwanis Lake, said state police.
Gonzalez was the only person in the vehicle.
The lake had to be partially drained to retrieve his body, because when the car was pulled out his body was not inside, police said.
An autopsy will be conducted in Allentown's Lehigh Valley Hospital on Tuesday, said York County Deputy Coroner Onalee Gilbert.
The Pennsylvania State Police Forensic Services Unit and Crash Reconstruction Unit were assisted at the scene by the York County Coroner's Office, York City Police and the York City Fire/Rescue Services.
