Central York School District will continue its Saturday morning detention program at the middle school.

Principal Edward McManama told the school board at its Sept. 10 meeting the program has been a great success.

"We rarely have repeat offenders," he said.

The program is run from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. two Saturdays each month. District staff is given the opportunity to monitor the mornings for a stipend of $30 an hour.

McManama told the board there are typically fewer than five students in attendance, and unless the number is more than eight, one monitor is all that is necessary.

"Parents are given the opportunity to request that their students do additional work other than just school work," he said. "Some have consented to allowing their child clean classrooms and perform other custodial tasks."
