A bridge that carries Plank Road over Interstate 83 in Shrewsbury Township reopened to traffic Thursday.

The bridge had been closed since January 2011 for a replacement project, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The new bridge is a two-span structure measuring 140 feet in length and 32 feet in width. The minimum clearance under the bridge has been increased to 17 feet.

The old bridge, which was structurally deficient, was built in 1958 and was a single-span structure that measured 93 feet in length and 32 feet in width from curb to curb. The minimal clearance under the old bridge was 14 feet.

The Plank Road bridge is the last of three bridges over I-83 to be replaced as part of a $6,067,655 construction contract with Deblin Inc. of Mechanicsburg.
