PITTSBURGH—Officials say a man struck and killed by a freight train in Pittsburgh was from Washington state and was believed to be homeless.

Pittsburgh homicide detectives believe 36-year-old Michael Smith, of Elma, Wash., was struck by the freight train Wednesday evening after he apparently ran onto the tracks to retrieve a bag.

Police say the man was seen sitting on the tracks in the city's Sheraden neighborhood as the CSX train approached. The man got off the tracks but went back for one or more bags and was killed.

The Allegheny County medical examiner has scheduled an autopsy Thursday.
