The York College men's soccer team parlayed a successful weekend stay in Newport News, Va., into a No. 2 ranking in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division III poll.

It's the year's first regular-season poll and was announced Tuesday.

The Spartans went from being unranked in the preseason poll to the second spot thanks to a pair of big wins at the 2012 Joe Pombriant/CNU Classic hosted by Christopher Newport. The Spartans downed Virginia Wesleyan 5-1 and then defeated No. 13 Christopher Newport 2-1 to win the tournament championship for the fifth time.

Trinity (Texas) earned the top spot while Loras, Ohio Northern and Amherst round out the rest of the top five.

Capital Athletic Conference rival Salisbury made its 2012 poll debut at No. 12 after going 2-0 over the weekend.

The Spartans are ranked first in the South Atlantic Region while Salisbury sits second. William Paterson, who will visit York this coming weekend, is third.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday and Sunday when they host the Holiday Inn Conference Center Classic in York. The Spartans take on McDaniel in the first semifinal on Saturday while Paterson squares off against Susquehanna in the second semifinal. The consolation game is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Sunday, followed by the title tilt at 3:30 p.m.
