Habitat for Humanity will build two homes for veterans as part of its Day of Remembrance activities on Sept. 11.

The event is in honor of those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on America on Sept. 11, 2001, and for people who serve the country, Habitat said in a statement.

The organization's Day of Remembrance and Veterans Build will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 564 and 566 Company St. in York.

Moments of silence will be held during the build in remembrance of the civilians and military personnel who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Homes are being built for two York County veterans: Michael Collazo, U.S. Army reservist serving a one-year term in Afghanistan, and Donnell Ingram, an eight-year Army veteran who was honorably discharged after being injured while on active duty.

Collazo has a wife, Claudia, and a 4-year-old daughter, while Ingram has an 8-year-old daughter, according to Habitat.

Needed: Habitat needs volunteers to help with the build. Building shifts are 7 to 11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. the goal is to have 20 volunteers per shift, Habitat said.

Volunteers can write messages of remembrance on the boards being used for framing. Red, white and blue screws and spackling will be used for the veterans building project, which began in May.

Volunteers are asked to donate $25 to participate in the Day of Remembrance building activities.

Habitat said it is raising money to cover the project cost of $118,000. About $58,000 has been raised so far.

Habitat houses are built with help from volunteers to keep mortgage costs down. Home candidates must complete 200 hours of sweat equity, or volunteer work, to help build their residence or another Habitat house.

They also must go through financial training and other new homeowner programs to prepare for taking on a 30-year mortgage and meeting other household needs.

Because Habitat holds the mortgage, the homeowners pay no interest. Mortgage payments are used to help fund other Habitat projects.

To get involved: Habitat for Humanity's Day of Remembrance and Veterans Build will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 564 and 566 Company St. in York City.
