A 19-year-old Glenville resident was charged Friday with attempted possession of a small amount of marijuana after he accidentally exchanged text messages looking for drugs from an off-duty West Manheim Township police officer.

West Manheim Township Police said Joshua Austin Neiderer sent messages to Pfc. Edwin Schneider in the evening of May 21. The officer received a text message that read, "Yo its josh n dougs cousin u got ne mids." Schneider replied "yo what u need." The reply was "a small of mid," police said.

Schneider recognized "mid" as slang for marijuana, and arranged to meet Neiderer in a Walmart parking lot on Baltimore Pike.

Schneider and on-duty West Manheim officers arrived at the Walmart at 8:27 p.m. and found Neiderer, who turned over his phone.

Police Chief Tim Hippensteel said it's not often that catching an alleged criminal is made so easy.

"I guess you might see him on one of those TV shows, like 'America's Dumbest Criminals' or something," the chief said.

Police said the teen thought he was texting a "J.R.," but they could not determine who "J.R." was or the actual number Neiderer was intending to text.

Police said the teen didn't notice that Schneider's automatic cellphone signature, "WMPD477," refers to West Manheim Police Department and his unit, 47-7.
