Buy me some peanuts and ... an orange?
York Revolution fans will find something a little out of the ordinary near the entrance inside Sovereign Bank Stadium as the team's season continues: A small stand offering salads, fruit and yogurt.
The not-so-typical game-time food is a result of a customer survey, said Rob Wilson, the general manager of Legends Hospitality at the stadium. Between surveys at the bottom of receipts, barcode scanners and an iPad-wielding survey taker walking around the stadium, spectators are encouraged to give feedback on the food quality and service.
And an overwhelming number of surveys had one common theme.
"I got a lot of responses for healthier food options," Wilson said. "Some people just said 'healthier food,' others suggested salads, yogurt and fruit."
So Wilson listened and built a small stand out of crates where game-goers could grab fruit, yogurt, fruit cups and salads. The stand opened for business on Saturday, Aug. 4, when the Revs went up against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.
Unsure of how it would go over, Wilson said he received a lot of positive feedback over the first two games, selling about two dozen salads between Saturday and Sunday of that weekend.
Right now, the endeavor isn't intended to turn a large profit, but simply to give people more options. The items at the stand are being sold at cost, just trying to cover the cost of labor, Wilson said.
The fruits and salads are currently being provided by the stadium's regular food distributor, Ettline Foods, but Wilson said, depending on how successful the stand is in the long run, he would consider expanding the selection and possibly buy from local farmers.
Even with healthier options available, however, Wilson said that most people come to a ballgame with their favorite foods in mind.
"No matter what we do, the biggest sellers are always going to be hot dogs, Turkey Hill ice cream and beer."
But even if the stand turns out to only attract a small crowd, Wilson said he plans to keep offering fruits, yogurts and salads, and will simply incorporate them into the regular concession stands. This way, people will always have to opportunity to grab something a little bit healthier, and he thinks customers will appreciate that.
"As long as the feedback is good, we'll keep doing it."
