A York City woman survived after being shot in the jaw early Friday morning while arguing with the father of her child, police said.
Alejandra Vazquez, 22, of the 200 block of Union Street, was treated at York Hospital and released, a hospital spokesman said.
The father of her child, Shan William Mehaffie, 23, of 102 Heidelberg Ave. in Manchester Township, was in the county's central booking unit on Friday morning awaiting arraignment.
He is being charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, being a felon in illegal possession of a firearm, simple assault, reckless endangerment and carrying a firearm without a license, police said.
Vazquez and Mehaffie were arguing on the sidewalk in front of her home about 1 a.m. when he pulled out a derringer-style .22-caliber handgun, pointed it at her head and fired twice, York City Police Lt. Tim Utley said.
Vazquez turned away as Mehaffie was firing and one round struck her on the right side of the face, near her jaw, Utley said.
Mehaffie fled in a car before officers arrived, but was tracked down and captured a short time later in the 600 block of Albright Avenue, near the city border with North York, Utley said.
Officers also recovered the gun Mehaffie allegedly used to shoot Vazquez, police said.
The search for Mehaffie centered on North George Street near the Codorus Creek, and city police were assisted by officers from Northern York County Regional Police, West Manchester Township Police and a K-9 unit from Springettsbury Township Police.
