Her lunch and dinner plans are set every day for the next week.

Mayor Grace Agnotti said she will be hosting guests at each stop along New Salem's first-ever restaurant week, running Friday through Aug. 10.

"I don't have to be in the kitchen, so it will be fun for me," she said.

The small borough, stretching a little less than half a square mile with about 700 residents, has attracted a bit more traffic this summer, serving as a destination along a detour caused by bridge work in Spring Grove.

Agnotti, who is in her second year as mayor, is hoping restaurant week will lure more visitors to the borough.

"I wanted to make people more aware of our small community and that New Salem exists," she said.

The borough's four restaurants don't seem like too many or too few for a town its size, Agnotti said.

"It's great that we have a choice," she said.

Participants: All four restaurants in the borough-Jim & Nena's Pizzeria, Pizza al Bacio, Sherwood Inn and Subway - will be participating in restaurant week, offering discounts and specials to customers.

Jim & Nena's, located at 3 S. Main St., will be offering a 10 percent discount, which cannot be combined with other specials, as well as a deal that gives customers two pizzas for the price of one, said owner Mark Ness.

"If restaurant week helps New Salem, it helps me," he said. "I'm excited to be part of this community. I've been here for 31 years, and I want to be here for another 31."

Sherwood Inn has also been in the borough for a few decades.

Bob Brunner has owned the restaurant at 205 N. Main St. for 33 years, and he's noticed an uptick in customer traffic since the Spring Grove detour has been in effect.

"I hope restaurant week brings in a few more," he said.

To help attract those customers, Brunner is offering several specials, including a buy-one-get-one-half-off deal for burgers and wraps; daily lunch specials that feature hamburger steak, ham steak, stuffed chicken breasts and side dishes; evening specials; and prime rib nights on Friday and Saturday.

Pizza al Bacio will also offer some deals, according to manager Manny Mircia.

A large, one-topping pizza will be on sale for $10.99; Italian and cheeseburger subs will be sold for $5; and a lunch special will allow customers to buy any sub at full price and get french fries and a drink for $2, he said.

Subway will also be offering specials and discounts, Agnotti said, but a manager at the made-to-order sub shop didn't return calls for comment.

A new Chinese restaurant planned at 340 N. Main St., in Sherwood Plaza, will not be open in time to participate in restaurant week, she said.
