SCRANTON - A northeastern Pennsylvania man who fatally shook his girlfriend's 2-month-old son after smoking synthetic marijuana has been ordered to spend at least a dozen years in prison.
Twenty-one-year-old Matthew Evans was sentenced Tuesday to 12 to 25 years in prison for the January death of Jayden Cohen. At the hearing he called his actions "disgusting" and accepted responsibility for the boy's death.
Authorities say Evans shook the baby on Dec. 20, causing severe brain injuries. The boy's mother, Dorri Cohen, told the court she waited until Jan. 2, the day after her 22nd birthday, to remove her son from life support.
Evans was formally charged in April and pleaded guilty to third-degree murder just a few days later.
