PHILADELPHIA - Tens of thousands of customers remain without power after strong storms swept across Pennsylvania, bringing strong winds and lightning on the heels of sweltering heat.

First Energy Corp. reported about 70,000 customers without power on Friday morning, with the worst problems in Butler County, north of Pittsburgh, and Cambria County, east of the city. Thousands more outages were reported by PPL Corp. in central Pennsylvania.

The high winds tore the roof off a volunteer fire hall in Butler County. In Cambria County, WJAC-TV in Johnstown had its Thursday evening newscast knocked off the air by lightning.

Temperatures dropped 20 degrees in some areas, providing some relief from the scorching heat that's plagued the state. But temperatures were expected to climb back into the mid-90s in some areas Friday, including Philadelphia.
