Spring Grove will call on Trevor Troxel when it opens play in the Region 4 Senior American Legion Tournament this weekend.

The York-Adams League champion will take on Cumberland County winner Hampden at 11 a.m. Saturday. The game is scheduled for Field No. 2 in Fayetteville, Franklin County.

"He's (Troxel) our No. 1 (pitcher), and we want to get off to a good start," Spring Grove manager Matt Spangler said. "He has a week's rest. I talked to him today, and he said that his arm feels great."

Troxel, a left-hander, heads up a deep pitching staff that Spangler has been able to count on all season.

"We led the league in pitching, our ERA was one point something," Spangler said. "I have six guys who I can run out

The staff has been able to count on a lot of offensive support. Spring Grove also led the league in hitting while compiling an impressive 17-2 record.

"We have long-ball threats, and singles and doubles guys," Spangler said. "I would like to think that we're a well-rounded team."

As for the team that Spring Grove will play on Saturday, Spangler doesn't have a lot of information.

"I understand their players are mainly from Cumberland Valley (High School), but not all high school players play Legion ball, so it's tough to judge the competition," he said. "I've been involved with baseball for quite a while now, and I've been here before where you don't know a lot about your first tournament opponent. You just put it between the lines and see who is the better team that day."

Spring Grove will make its first Region 4 appearance in four years. However, many of the current players were part of the Spring Grove Junior Legion team that finished third in the Region 4 Tournament two years ago.

Matt Spangler expects the bracket to be loaded with high-quality teams.

"You're playing league champions from every league. We're excited to be back in the regional tournament, and we're up for the challenge and ready to go," he said.

The winner of the Region 4 Tournament, a double-elimination event, will qualify for the state tournament in Boyertown.

In addition to the Spring Grove-Hampden game, the other first-round games on Saturday are: Waynesboro vs. Upper Dauphin, 9:30 a.m. on Field No. 1; Ephrata vs. Hummelstown, 12:30 p.m. on Field No. 1; and Campbelltown vs. the host team, Fayetteville, 4 p.m. on Field No. 1.
