The Ivy League university said in a written statement that it made the moves following a report that concluded the late Penn State football coach was among those who concealed child sex abuse by former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Paterno graduated from Brown in 1950.
Brown said Paterno's name has been permanently and retroactively removed from an award for outstanding male freshman athlete. The award was created in 1991 and named for Paterno in 1993. The university said it would inform past recipients of the award of the decision.
The board of directors of the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame is reviewing his status, the school said. He was inducted in 1977.
The removal of his name from the coaching chair, once called the Howard D. Williams '17/Joseph V. Paterno '50 football coaching chair, was made due to issues that predated the Penn State matter, the school said.
