A York City man was simply sitting with friends, hanging out, when he was approached and shot in the stomach early Wednesday morning, York City Police said.

Michael Smith, 19, of Salem Avenue, remains in serious condition in York Hospital, a hospital spokesman said.

York City Police said Smith is expected to survive.

According to police, Smith and others were sitting and hanging out behind the 200 block of East Princess Street about 1:50 a.m. when two males approached Smith.

One of them pulled out a gun and shot Smith, after which both males ran off, police said. A detailed description of the shooter was not available.

The motive of the shooting remains unknown, police said.
