A Spring Garden Township man who allegedly struck a West York police officer with a car was arrested Monday by U.S. marshals.
Jose Yomar Leon-Ortiz, 23, of 1423 Mount Rose Ave., was arrested in York City during a warrant roundup, according to West York Police.
Leon-Ortiz was wanted on a warrant that's unrelated to the incident that happened in West York Saturday morning, police said.
He is charged with four counts of aggravated assault and one count each of attempted aggravated assault and reckless endangerment, as well as summary reckless driving and speeding, in relation to the West York incident, according his charging documents.
Leon-Ortiz remains free on $30,000 bail.
The incident: A borough police officer was on foot patrol when he saw Yikeem Williams, 24, whose address is not known, urinating in a parking lot in the first block of Overbrook Avenue and tried to stop him about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, according to charging documents.
Williams jumped into the passenger side of a 1997 silver BMW 540 driven by Leon-Ortiz.
Leon-Ortiz backed the car into a parking space with the front of the car facing the officer, documents state.
The officer approached the car from the front while telling Leon-Ortiz to stop. When the officer was about 10 feet from the car, Leon-Ortiz accelerated quickly toward the officer, documents state.
Injuries: Though the car struck the officer, he escaped serious injury by partially jumping out of the way. However, he suffered minor injuries to his hands and arms when the car hit them as he put them up in an attempt to protect himself, documents state.
The officer also received a glancing blow from the front right fender and bumper, documents state.
The BMW then fled at a high rate of speed onto East King Street, documents state.
The officer was able to get the car's registration number and positively identified Leon-Ortiz as the driver through a police database, documents state.
On Sunday, police spoke with Williams, who confirmed Leon-Ortiz was the driver of the BMW, documents state.
