Motorists on Interstate 83 in the area of the Sherman Street bridge may encounter nighttime delays this week.

Traffic stoppages, which are estimated to last up to 15 minutes at a time, are needed so a work crew can install 14 new beams on the bridge between Springettsbury and Spring Garden townships, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The contractor expects to install three to four beams per night, starting Monday.

Traffic stoppages can be expected between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. and state police will be assisting with traffic control, PennDOT said.

The beam installation is part of an $8.9 million project to replace the bridge, which is expected to be reopened in December.
