Ten fire departments and about 60 firefighters battled an early morning blaze Monday but couldn't save the offices and storage space at a southern York County sawmill.

The fire at DH Dubel Mill & Lumber Co., 15979 Sawmill Road in Hopewell Township, was reported by a newspaper carrier and a passer-by at 1:47 a.m., said Ira Walker Jr., chief at Eureka Volunteer Fire Co. in Stewartstown.

Walker said the fire was described as a "pile of logs on fire," but the fire had spread to two buildings by the time he arrived, just minutes later. Flames fully engulfed and destroyed a small mobile office building and a cement block building that was used for storage, he said.

It took crews about an hour to control the blaze, but they were on-scene until about 5 a.m., he said.

Trooper Brad Dunham, a state police fire marshal, was still investigating at the scene Monday around 10 a.m. He said the fire originated in the office building but the cause is still uncertain. He estimated damage at about $250,000.

Business owner David Dubel, 76, of Baltimore County was also still on the scene Monday morning. He said the mill employs six people, and he's hoping to have it running for Tuesday so he can ship a big order to New York on Wednesday.

"The only good consequence is that it wasn't the big building," he said, pointing to the milling operation in a separate building.

During the blaze, one firefighter was taken to York Hospital and treated and released for an injury he suffered when he unhooked a coupling, which was under extreme pressure, and it hit his arm and forehead, Walker said.
