With field size the second highest in the mid-Atlantic region, on-track and total wagering in June showed an increase for the fourth consecutive month at Penn National Race Course.
Penn National averaged 8.10 horses per race in June, second only to Belmont Park's 8.41 starters. In comparison, Monmouth Park had 7.6 starters per race, Parx was at 7.53, and Delaware Park at 6.89.
Live on-track handle jumped 15.07 percent over the comparable 17 dates in 2011, and export wagering from other tracks jumped from $10.3 million to $14.38 million, for a 39.3 percent year-over-year increase.
Track officials are hoping that Penn National's Governor's Cup Racing festival Weekend (Jul 27-28) will anchor another solid month. The track will host six stakes races over the two days headlined by the 40th running of the $200,000 Pennsylvania Governor's Cup over five furlongs on the turf on Saturday, July 28. Total purses are expected to be in the $1 million range for the weekend.
