PennDOT has announced that bridge painting will begin Monday on the I-83 bridge over the Pennsylvania Turnpike on-and-off ramps in Fairview Township.

The work is part of an overall $11 million construction project that began in April 2011. The contract, awarded to Trumbull Corporation of Pittsburgh, includes highway reconstruction on I-83, bridge deck replacement on the I-83 bridges over the Pennsylvania Turnpike and over the Exit 39-B on-and-off ramps, ramp resurfacing, guiderail and sign installation and new traffic lines.

Starting Monday, motorists might encounter overnight turnpike ramp detours to and from I-83 South between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. as crews repaint the existing steel beams on the I-83 bridge over the turnpike ramps.

A signed detour will direct I-83 South traffic headed to the turnpike to continue to Exit 39-A for Route 114, turn right onto Route 114 and turn right onto I-83 North to the ramp to the turnpike.

Turnpike traffic headed to I-83 South will be directed onto I-83 North to Exit 40-A for Limekiln Road, turn right onto Limekiln Road and turn right onto the ramp to I-83 South to the ramp to the turnpike.

In anticipation of heavier than normal traffic volumes, the ramp detours will not be in effect between June 29 and July 9.

PennDOT expects the contractor to complete bridge painting operations by the end of July, weather permitting.
