For the York Rescue Mission, Saturday will be about the kids.
The mission is working with local churches to hold its annual Kid's Karnival from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Penn Park, at West College and Pershing avenues in York City.
While the carnival is free and open to the public, the event is geared toward children who live in the city and are ages 3 to 11 years old, said Ada Hite, the mission's public relations associate.
"They're out of school, and (the carnival) gives them something to do," she said. "There are a lot of kids who live in that area. A lot of kids who like to be at that park. It's something fun for the kids and their siblings and families."
Games, food: Local churches, businesses and individuals are donating food, drinks and equipment for the event, which will feature games, prizes and live entertainment, including a clown show.
The mission is making sure to have the children's favorite carnival food on hand, including hot dogs, popcorn and cotton candy, Hite said.
The mission has been working for the last three months with churches, businesses, contributors and volunteers to organize the carnival, Hite said.
The event is well-attended and children do have fun, she said. The mission staff also enjoys having a fun park day with youth, she added.
"It's a good time for us to get out into the public and to witness to them and show God's love and mercy and just to be compassionate toward them, to give freely and not ask for anything in return," Hite said.
