Daugherty

Shawn Michael Daugherty was a friendly young man who was well-liked by his fellow students at Red Lion Area High School, according to district Superintendent Scott Deisley.

"(He was) just a really nice kid -- someone who will be missed for sure," Deisley said.

The 17-year-old, who lived in the 12500 block of Collinsville Road in Chanceford Township, was killed Monday afternoon when he was partially thrown from a pickup truck and pinned underneath it, according to state police.

A member of the class of 2013, Shawn just finished his junior year, Deisley said.

The Red Lion Area School District now has professionals in place to help students cope with the tragedy, he said.

"We have psychologists available for counseling at the high school ... for as long as we need to," Deisley said.

Shawn's teachers, going back years, were personally notified.

"We wanted them to hear it (first), not to have to read about it," Deisley said.

The superintendent said he's been told Shawn was a hardworking teen.

The mishap: Shawn was riding in a Ford Ranger being driven by Fabian Posey, 18, of Red Lion, about 3:50 p.m. Monday when the truck's rear tire went into a rut, police said.

That caused the truck to travel up an embankment and flip onto its passenger side, partially throwing Shawn out of the truck, then pinning him underneath it, according to police.

It happened along a private farm lane on the property of Shawn's neighbor, police said.

Shawn was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the York County Coroner's Office.

Services: Viewings will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel, 35 Gotham Place in Red Lion.

A service will follow Friday's viewing, according to Shawn's obituary.

Shawn's survivors include his parents, Nevin and Belinda Daugherty; a brother, Jeremy Daugherty; and a sister, Autumn Daugherty.

He loved Ford vehicles, especially his Ford Ranger, and also loved to ride snowmobiles and John Deere equipment, his obituary states.

In addition to school, Shawn helped out as needed on the family farm, according to the obituary.
