The Baltimore Orioles have selected Louisiana State right-hander Kevin Gausman with the No. 4 overall pick in baseball's amateur draft.
Gausman, 21, is a 6-foot-4, 185-pound sophomore from Centennial, Colo. He went 11-1 with a 2.72 ERA (1152/3 innings pitched, 35 earned runs) with 128 strikeouts, 27 walks and two complete games in 16 starts for LSU this season.
He was 5-6 with a 3.51 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 892/3 innings in his freshman season.
Gausman's pitching coach at LSU was Alan Dunn, a former Orioles bullpen coach who was well-respected by club brass.
Gausman was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the sixth round of the 2010 draft but did not sign.
He becomes the third Orioles first round pick out of LSU, joining Mike Fontenot (2001, 19th overall) and Ben McDonald (1989, first overall).
