MONTROSE, Pa. - A northeastern Pennsylvania Spanish teacher is facing charges she stole nearly $95,000 from her local teachers union while she served as the union's treasurer.

Investigators say 53-year-old Cheryl Arnold stole the money between 2008 and November. She turned herself in Monday to face charges including theft and receiving stolen property.

The Montrose Education Association says it noticed the money was missing last year. State police say when they interviewed Arnold she told them stole money for personal expenses but paid some of it back, claiming she believed she owed about $50,000.

Arnold and her attorney declined comment outside a district judge's office. She is free on $10,000 unsecured bail.

District officials say Arnold is suspended without pay.
