York College women's track and field standout Jasmine Smith has been selected as the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Rookie of the Year.
Smith is the second Spartan in as many years to garner the honor. Dover's Laura Rowlands collected the accolade last season.
Smith captured her first CAC outdoor title by winning the long jump at the annual CAC Outdoor Championships at Frostburg State earlier this month. The rookie jumped a conference-championship-winning 17 feet, 8.25 inches.
Smith also collected a pair of second-place finishes at those CAC Championships in the 100-meter dash (13.13 seconds) and In the 400 relay. Smith teamed up with Rowlands, Donteris Spence and Deborah Fidele to not only snag a second-place finish but also establish a new Spartan-record with a time of 49.67 seconds.
Smith started her collegiate track and field career with a strong indoor season. She broke four program records in indoor events in the 55-, 60- and 200-meter dashes, while also setting a new record in the long jump.
In the outdoor campaign, Smith set a new program record in the long jump during the season at 18-8.
