A potential late-inning, come-from-behind victory turned into a disappointing loss for the York Revolution on Tuesday night.

The Revs dropped their series opener at Long Island, 5-2, in front of 4,378 fans at Bethpage Ballpark. The Revs (3-8) will look to even things up on Wednesday in the middle game of a three-game series, before returning home to York on Friday night.

Having been held scoreless on just two hits through the first seven innings, the Revs ripped off three consecutive hits to begin the eighth, taking a 2-1 lead. Chris Nowak and Andres Perez singled on the first two pitches of the inning, and James Shanks smacked a two-strike pitch through the right side of the infield for the game-tying hit, bringing York even at 1-1. Ramon Castro followed with a sacrifice fly to center, providing the Revs with their first lead of the game.

Unfortunately for York, the lead proved to be short-lived. Brandon Sing blasted a game-tying homer down the left-field line in the bottom of the inning, the first of five consecutive hits that resulted in a decisive four-run counter-punch by Long Island (7-4). Lew Ford accounted for the tie-breaking blow on a two-run triple to right-center, and James McOwen added an RBI single off eighth-inning reliever Adam Thomas (0-1), who entered the night having not allowed a run in his first five innings of the season. Tuesday, however, Thomas was charged with four runs and suffered the loss.

York's Ryan Feierabend and Long Island's Joe Esposito locked horns in a pitchers' duel. A scoreless draw ensued into the sixth inning. That's when Long Island grabbed its first lead after Bryant Nelson reached on a wind-blown popup that landed for a double, and Ryan Garko singled him home on a hot shot that took a nasty hop past Castro at third. It proved to be the only run allowed by Feierabend in six innings, and the only run allowed by the lefty in 11.0 combined innings spanning his last two starts.

Esposito, meanwhile, held the Revs without a run in 61/3 innings.

York's Chris Cody (0-2) will face Long Island's Bob Zimmermann (1-0) in Wednesday's game at 6:35 p.m.
