Police said a Northeastern High School student used a bow and arrow to kill a cow owned by an East Manchester Township farmer a week and a half ago, and may have been angry at the farmer.

Cole Allen Davis, 18, of 200 Fallsview Ave. in Newberry Township, will be charged with agricultural vandalism and killing and/or maiming a domestic animal, according to Northeastern Regional Police Chief Bryan Rizzo. Both charges are misdemeanors and were filed Tuesday.

Police said the black Angus cow, which had given birth to a calf a few weeks earlier, was killed while in a pasture along Gravel Hill Road, near the intersection of Long Road.

It happened overnight April 21, police said.

Davis shot the cow once, according to Rizzo.

"He admitted to doing it, but then turned around and said it was he and his friends who did it," the chief said. "He's the only one who actually shot the cow."

Bragged? No other arrests will be made, said Rizzo, adding officers focused on Davis after getting tips he was responsible.

"His friends gave him up," the chief said. "He was overheard bragging about it in school."

There were three juveniles in the vehicle with Davis when he shot the cow, charging documents state. The cow was in a pasture at Forge Hill Farms, owned by Chuck Wolf, police said.

"Prior to the incident Davis was to have made negative comments about Wolf posting his land," documents state.

According to those documents, Davis instructed one of the teens to pull over, at which point he retrieved his friend's compound bow and arrow and prepared to shoot a cow.

Called to cows? He was about 25 yards from the herd, which started moving farther from the fence, documents state.

At that point, Davis began calling to and whistling at the cows, trying to get them to stop, police said.

"When one of the cows stopped turned and looked at Davis, he ... shot the cow," documents state.

Wolf called the incident "maddening."

The cow was valued at about $1,800, according to charging documents.

Its calf is being hand-fed milk from a bottle, according to Wolf.

Davis could not be reached for comment; it's unclear whether he's retained an attorney.
