The Fissels Church Road bridge over the Centerville Creek is closed for a reconstruction project, the state Department of Transportation announced Monday.

Fissels Church Road will be closed from Route 216 and Bonair Road until the end of December, said Mike Crochunis, PennDOT spokesman.

The bridge, classified as structurally deficient, spans the border between Shrewsbury and Codorus townships.

The existing concrete adjacent box beam bridge will be demolished and replaced with a new single-span pre-stressed concrete box beam bridge, Crochunis said.

Abel Construction Inc. of Mountville, Lancaster County, was awarded the $635,756 contract that includes bridge replacement, road approach construction, drainage improvements, guiderail installation and new traffic lanes.

PennDOT expects work on the new bridge to be completed by the end of December. Until then, a detour that follows Route 616 and Route 216 will be in place, Crochunis said.
