A Newberry Township man was badly hurt Wednesday night when his car crashed into a tree in the township, police said.

Ryan Savage, 23, of White Birch Lane, was flown to York Hospital by medical helicopter after the 10:15 p.m. crash, according to Newberry Township Police Chief John Snyder.

He suffered critical injuries, the chief said.

Savage was southbound in the 300 block of Roxberry Road when his 1997 BMW went off the southbound side of the road and crashed into a tree, according to Snyder.

Officers have not yet been able to talk to Savage, so it's unclear why the crash occurred, the chief said.

The BMW was totaled, according to Snyder, who said a full accident reconstruction is being done.
