A York County man who died of burns he suffered Friday in a Windsor Township parking lot killed himself, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Claude Stabley.

The man doused himself with gasoline and deliberately set himself on fire, according to Stabley, who has ruled the death a suicide.

York Area Regional Police Sgt. Jeffrey Dunbar said the man, who was in his early 50s, died at York Hospital after being flown there by medical helicopter.

He was pronounced dead at 12:30 p.m., Stabley said.

The incident happened about 11:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Windsor Commons in the 3100 block of Cape Horn Road, the sergeant said.

Witnesses reported seeing smoke coming from a vehicle parked in the lot, then saw the man get out the driver's side of the vehicle, according to Dunbar.

"He was already fully engulfed in flames," the sergeant said.

Several witnesses ran to the man's aid and used a blanket to put out the flames, Dunbar said.

Because of his injuries, the victim was unable to communicate at the scene, he said.

The man had parked the vehicle away from other cars in the lot, about halfway between the Giant Food Store gas pumps and the Sonic fast-food restaurant, Dunbar said.

Neither the York County Coroner's Office nor York Area Regional Police released the man's name.
