A man who allegedly stuffed a package of frozen shrimp down his pants while in a Dover Township supermarket is facing charges for attacking a store security guard, police said.

Brian Troy McDaniel, 37, of the 5700 block of Susquehanna Trail in Conewago Township, is being charged with robbery, simple assault and retail theft for Thursday's incident at Weis Markets, 2850 Carlisle Road, police said.

Northern York County Regional Police said McDaniel attacked a Weis loss-prevention officer who tried to stop McDaniel as he was leaving the store about 4:50 p.m.

But McDaniel escalated the situation from shoplifting to robbery when he attacked the officer, striking him repeatedly in the head, face and neck, according to police. He struggled free and started running across the parking lot, police said.

The loss-prevention officer and a bystander chased McDaniel, caught him and held him on the ground until police arrived, Northern Regional Lt. David Lash said.

The loss-prevention officer suffered bumps, bruises and a cut on his neck during the attack, but declined treatment at the scene, Lash said. Neither the bystander nor McDaniel was hurt, Lash said.

Anyone who witnessed the robbery or has information about it is asked to call police at 292-3647.
