In the York area, approximately 40,000 customers were without power, Met-Ed reported. One of the biggest areas affected was around Dover, with 2,000 to 5,000 customers affected.
Customers were also without power in the Hellam and Mount Wolf areas. Other outages were reported elsewhere, including West Manchester Township, Dallastown, Etters, Emigsville, Hanover, Windsor, York Haven, Manchester, Thomasville and Red Lion.
A 115,000-volt power line that runs through substations in parts of Adams County and Jackson Township, Yorkana and Middletown malfunctioned, said Med-Ed official Kathy Seilhamer. The cause is not yet known.
"Crews are in various locations performing switching activities that allow us to reroute power, to restore power as quickly as possible," Seilhamer said Wednesday evening.
York County 911 reported traffic light outages throughout the York area. Affected areas included the stretch of Route 30 through West Manchester Township.
Portions of West Manchester Township regained power shortly after 7 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., power went out in parts of York City, affecting traffic lights and some downtown buildings, including Sovereign Bank Stadium. The Revolution did not have a home game Wednesday, so baseball was not disrupted Power was restored to the downtown outage area about 10:30 p.m.said Met-Ed crews were able to make repairs, and all customers at that time should have had power restored.
