The gains were broad. All but one stock (Verizon) in the Dow Jones industrial average rose. All 10 industry groups in the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose.
Both the Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index had their biggest gains since July 11. It was the first time the Dow closed above 15,000 since Aug. 23.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 140.62 points, or 0.9 percent, to close at 15,063.12.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 16.54 points, or 1 percent, to 1,671.71.
The Nasdaq composite rose 46.17 points, or 1.26 percent, to 3,706.18.
For the year so far:
The Dow is up 1,958.98 points, or 15 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 245.52 points, or 17.2 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 686.67 points, or 22.7 percent.
