The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index surged to all-time highs Thursday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank would keep supporting the economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 169.26 points, or 1.1 percent, to 15,460.92.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 22.40 points, or 1.4 percent, to 1,675.02.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 57.55 points, or 1.6 percent, to 3,578.30.

For the week:

The Dow Jones industrial average is up 325.08 points, or 3.7 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 is up 43.13 points, or 4.3 percent.

The Nasdaq composite index is up 98.92 points, or 5.1 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 2,356.78 points, or 18 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 248.83 points, or 17.5 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 558.79 points, or 18.5 percent.
