RAISING CROPS: Prices for grains and beans rose as investors hoped that demand for exports from major buyers like China would pick up. Soybeans rose 3 percent and wheat and corn each rose about 2 percent.

ENERGIZED: The prospect of colder temperatures in the Northeast sent the price of oil higher. Other energy futures also rose. Benchmark crude rose 58 cents to finish at $94.14 a barrel in New York.

MIXED METALS: Gold for February delivery rose $8.80 to $1,669.40; Silver for March delivery rose 70.20 cents to $31.110; copper for March delivery fell 2 cents to $3.6340 a pound.
