Butch Staley was working at the York Economy Store when he heard a pop.

"And then someone said someone got shot," he said.

Staley, 62, said he rushed out the back of the West Market Street store to find a man lying nearby.

"He was talking for a while," Staley said. "He kept telling us, 'Don't let me die. Don't let me die.'"

York City Police said they were dispatched about 2:30 p.m. to the first block of North Newberry Street.

The shooting victim is Anthony Colon of York, police said. Police did not provide an age or address for Colon.

Colon was taken to York Hospital with a gunshot wound to the torso, police said.

Barry Sparks, the hospital's spokesman, did not have information about Colon's condition at 4:30 p.m.

In a news release, police said the shooting appears to have "occurred following an altercation."

They are asking anyone with information to contact the department at (717) 846-1234.
