There's a new brand in town.
York City's west end has been given the nickname "Weco," which is short for "west of the Codorus."
Weco includes the four-block area bordered by the Codorus, Penn Street, and West Market and West Philadelphia streets.
It's the latest marketing effort from Downtown Inc, a York-based nonprofit tasked with supporting downtown businesses.
Branding Weco will help galvanize residents and businesses around a singular, cohesive message, said Sonia Huntzinger, executive director of Downtown Inc.
In Weco, consumers will find an accessible and eclectic mix of options, said Mandy Arnold, president of Gavin Advertising.
Within the next month Arnold is relocating her business from 110 N. George St. to 328 W. Market St., where she and her husband also have a residence.
The businesses: "It's a great residential community and so close to everything. More businesses like ours are coming in and making storefronts active because companies see a value in eclectic, urban, creative environments," she said.
Other businesses in Weco include Ironic, KrysLyn's Bridal Boutique, New Grounds Roasting Company, Roosevelt Tavern, The York Emporium, Waterway Bar & Grill, YMCA, York Blue Moon and more.
"One thing you notice right away is there are a lot of fun things to do there," Huntzinger said. "We're hoping to use the Weco brand as a marketing tool to bring in other businesses to the area."
Weco is the fourth branded area in downtown York. Other areas include the Beaver Street Merchants, Market District and Royal Square.
