The School of Culinary Arts' student-run Bake Shoppe is relocating.
Saturday was the bakery's last day at its York City address next to Central Market.
The Bake Shoppe operated at 44 W. Philadelphia St. for about three years in an annex of the market and will reopen in the school's student-run restaurant in North York on Tuesday, June 18.
The move is attributed to several reasons, said school spokesman John Dreibelbis:
The layout of the student-run restaurant at 1063 N. George St. recently changed and can now accommodate the bakery.
Curriculum will be more complete, with culinary students now being more involved in the restaurant.
And, he said, it became very expensive to operate in the city.
The Bake Shoppe's rent had increased during the last couple of years, but it was expected, Dreibelbis said.
He declined comment on the specific amount or the Bake Shoppe's revenue in the city.
'Economic decision': "It was nothing contentious. We were really glad to be part of everything going on downtown and have good things to say about Central Market. The move was just a business and economic decision. It made more sense economically to move into our own building," he said.
The alternative was to raise tuition costs, and nobody wanted to do that, Dreibelbis said.
A new class of pastry students begins on June 18, and they will produce the same items that were sold downtown, he said.
"There should be plenty of students and plenty baked goods," Dreibelbis said.
A perk of the new location is the free parking right next to the North York building, he said.
Bake Shoppe hours will be 7 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Central Market has not yet found a tenant to fill the space left vacant by the Bake Shoppe, according to Casi Babinchak, chief operations officer at Central Market.
"We're going to take another look at the space and assess all possible uses before making a decision about what type of tenant to attract there," she said.
