The WellSpan Board of Directors expects to announce a new CEO by June 1, said chairwoman Jan Herrold.
Current CEO Bruce Bartels, who will retire at the end of this year, will help during the transition.
"He was the first and only CEO WellSpan has ever had. WellSpan became WellSpan under his leadership," Herrold said.
But the board hasn't been looking for another Bartels or someone to grow the brand exponentially.
"The course we've been on has been highly successful. We're not looking to make a great departure from that. We're not looking for a turnaround. We want someone who can keep an equilibrium with all the positive work (Bartels) has done," she said.
Steady: During his 25 years of leadership, WellSpan grew from a single hospital into a regional health system. But growth will not be WellSpan's focus during the next 25 years, Herrold said.
"Our scale is serving us well," she said.
Instead, the health system wants to perfect its level of care, access, affordability and accountability, Herrold said.
"(Bartels) brings us all back over and over again, saying, 'It's not about us. It's about our patients, community and employees.'
"At WellSpan we don't want or need to be known for growth. We want to be known for high-quality care. That's our North Star," she said.
