Giant Food Stores on Thursday announced a recall on bird treats due to possible salmonella contamination.
Two products are included in the recall: Kaytee Parakeet Honey Treat Value Pack and Kaytee Parakeet Honey Stick.
Kaytee removed the items from sale due to possible salmonella contamination in the parsley flake ingredients.
The 7-ounce honey treat value pack includes UPC 7185955027 and has best-before dates of 12/4/2013 - 8/2/2014. And the 3.5-ounce honey stick includes UPC 7185900431 and has best-before dates of 12/6/2013 - 5/29/2014.
Giant has received no reports of pet or human illnesses, but the product could be potentially harmful to birds who ingest the product or to humans who handle the products, according to a news release.
The grocery chain advises pet owners to thoroughly wash their hands after having contact with the recalled products and clean any surfaces that were exposed.
Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. The infections can be life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and patients in treatment for HIV and cancer, according to the release.
Common symptoms in humans include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, chills, headache, nausea and vomiting.
For pets, symptoms include lethargy, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite and abdominal pain.
Customers who have purchased the products are asked to discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to Giant for a full refund, according to the release.
