Stocks closed mixed on Friday after U.S. labor market numbers came in, well, mixed. The unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent, which was better than expected. Job creation was about the same as economists had forecast.

Stock indexes rose in the morning, but by afternoon they had drifted mostly lower. At one point the Dow Jones industrial average was up 86 points, but it closed with a gain of nearly 35 points

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 34.79 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 13,610.15.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.47 points, or 0.03 percent, to 1,460.93.

The Nasdaq composite fell 13.27 points, or 0.4 percent, to 3,136.19.

For the week:

The Dow is up 173.02, or 1.3 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 20.26 points, or 1.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 19.96 points, or 0.6 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 1,392.59 points, or 11.4 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 203.33 points, or 16.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 531.04 points, or 20.4 percent.
