Giant Food Stores pulled two kinds of peanut butter from shelves this week because of a possible salmonella contamination, the company announced Wednesday.
Sunland Inc., which recalled the products, has removed the following items from sale: Sunland Banana Peanut Butter Spread, 16 oz., and Sunland Raspberry Peanut Butter Spread, 16 oz.
The products included in the recall have used-by dates between May 1, 2013, and Sept. 24, 2013.
Customers who purchased these items should throw away any unused portions and bring their receipts to their nearest Giant for a full refund, according to a news release.
Salmonella can cause salmonellosis -- one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. It can cause fatal infections in individuals with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, those infected with HIV and patients receiving chemotherapy, according to the company.
Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight to 72 hours of consumption.Chills, headache, nausea and vomiting may also be experienced for seven days.
